  • November Photo Contest/Challenge - Bokeh!

This month's challenge: Bokeh! Pronounced as Bo-kāh; Rhymes with Mocha

What is it? ....Although difficult to quantify, some lenses enhance overall image quality by producing more subjectively pleasing out-of-focus areas. Good bokeh is especially important for large-aperture lenses, macro lenses, and long telephoto lenses because they are typically used with a shallow depth of field.

More on Bokeh: Bokeh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can see some examples of good to great bokeh in the images below.

As always, please keep these images PG-13, under 1280 pixels in wide dimension and GO MAKE A NEW IMAGE!!!

Re: November Photo Contest/Challenge - Bokeh!

Just as some tips if you've never shot specifically to display your lens' bokeh:

1: Focus closer. As you focus closer and closer to the film plane, the narrower the depth of field is going to be. This applies to ANY lens.

    2. Wider apertures. Wider the aperture (smaller f/stop number, like f/1.2 or f/1.8 or for zooms f/2.8), the narrower the depth of field. Most lenses (some rare exceptions apply to this rule) have their best/smoothest bokeh at full aperture, as well.

    3. Longer lenses can throw the background further out of focus than can shorter focal length lenses. Your 15mm fish-eye may open to f/2.8, but even a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom will have much narrower depth of field at 50mm f/2.8 than your 15mm ever will, unless it can focus 1" in front of the front element. A 400mm f/2.8 would be even better.

    4. Macros do count for this contest! Break out those macro lenses, or extender tubes, or reversing rings. The technology used doesn't matter as much as the equipment, so experiment and have some fun! I'll be submitting a new image, and I highly recommend you do as well.

    5. Shiny items in the background will give you discs of light, like in my first shot above. Experiment with these to make them more/less distracting.

    6. Finally, you don't need special expensive equipment, or any sort of macro setup to make shots with the background out of focus in a pleasing way. Look for plain backgrounds with low contrast, hopefully less bright than your main subject, or if you have a fast/long lens, you can just look for bright colors and get a nice smooth gradient from one color to another which can be quite interesting and yet not distracting.

PM me if you need some help with equipment or techniques, I've experimented a lot lately for exactly these kinds of shots and can probably at least lead you in the right direction if not answer your question directly. I'd also be happy to meet and show you what I do to get shots in this vein, and what equipment I use.
